The Rhône Valley is the oldest wine-producing region in France (the first cultivated vines in the region were probably planted around 600 BC) and the Rhone AOC is the the second largest after Bordeaux.

THE NORTHERN RHÔNE
Characterised by a semi-continental climate with harsh winters but warm summers, its climate is influenced by the mistral wind which brings colder air from Massif Central mountains.
RED CEPAGES: Syrah
WHITE CEPAGES: Marsanne, Roussane, Viognier
SOILS: Granite, Gneiss, Mica Shist
Most famous Appellations from Northern Rhone are Côte-Rôtie AOC, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage etc…
THE SOUTHERN RHÔNE
Characterised by a Mediterranean climate, therefore the cepages are different:
RED CEPAGES: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre
WHITE CEPAGES: Clairette, White Grenache, Roussane, Bourboulenc
SOILS:Gravels, Sand, Clay
Most famous Appellations from Southern Rhone Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, Vacqueyras AOC etc…
