One of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world, it is found in France, Spain (where the grape probably originated), Australia, US….
It ripens late, so it needs hot and dry conditions with a careful control of yields for best results in order to avoid high alcohol content.
Grenache is the dominant variety in most Southern Rhône wines, where the hot and dry soils are well drained, and it thrives on some Schist and Granite soils.
As an example, It has responded very well to the stony soil in Châteauneuf-du-Pape , (over 80% of the blend) with the area’s galets roulés heat retaining stones.
Usually blended with other varieties such as Syrah and Carignan in South east of France for a better balance, it is in fact soft on the palate (low tannins) it develops characteristic red fruit flavors (raspberry and strawberry) with a subtle, white pepper spice note.
